How Made-to-Order Jewellery Is Created

At L&Co., many of our pieces are made to order in our workshop in Kofu, Yamanashi, an area known as one of Japan’s historic jewellery-making regions.

Unlike mass-produced accessories, each piece goes through multiple stages of craftsmanship before it is completed. From shaping raw materials to the final polish, every ring and necklace is carefully finished by hand.

Step 1: Design & Concept

Every piece begins with an idea. Some designs are inspired by traditional Japanese culture, including samurai armour, Japanese patterns, seasonal flowers, and kanji symbols. Others focus on texture, balance, and everyday wearability. Before production begins, proportions, details, and finishes are carefully considered to ensure the piece feels both unique and comfortable to wear.

Step 2: Wax Modelling

Once the design is finalised, a wax model is created. This stage allows craftsmen to shape fine details before the metal casting process begins. Small adjustments are often made by hand to refine the form, thickness, and texture of the jewellery. For detailed pieces such as Samurai rings or engraved designs, this stage is especially important.

Step 3: Casting the Metal

After the wax model is complete, the jewellery is cast into metal using traditional casting techniques. Depending on the design, materials may include sterling silver, gold plating, or other finishes. The casting process transforms the original model into a wearable piece of jewellery. At this stage, the piece still appears rough and unfinished.

Step 4: Polishing & Refinement

After casting, each piece is carefully polished and refined by hand. Edges are smoothed, surfaces are cleaned, and textures are enhanced to bring out the character of the design. Some finishes are intentionally oxidised or antique-coated to create depth and contrast.

This process takes time and attention to detail, especially for pieces with intricate patterns or engravings.

Step 5: Final Inspection

Before shipment, every piece goes through a final inspection. We check the finish, sizing, engraving, and overall quality to ensure each item meets our standards before it leaves our workshop. Because many of our pieces are made to order, production takes approximately 4–5 weeks before shipping.

Crafted in Japan

L&Co. jewellery is created in Kofu, Yamanashi, where jewellery craftsmanship has been part of the region’s history for generations. By choosing made-to-order production, we focus on creating pieces with care rather than mass-producing large quantities, allowing each design to retain its individuality and craftsmanship.
