Autumn in Yamanashi

Autumn in Yamanashi

Autumn has arrived in Yamanashi Prefecture — the air is crisp, and it’s the perfect time to enjoy stunning lake views and the warm hues of the changing leaves.

Yamanashi is divided into two main regions: the Kuninaka area (central to western Yamanashi) and the Gunnai area(eastern Yamanashi).

The Kuninaka area centers around Kofu City, the prefectural capital and home to our jewelry head office. This area is well known for fruit picking, especially Shine Muscat grapes, local wineries, and the scenic Shosenkyo Gorge, which becomes breathtaking during the autumn season.

The Gunnai area is famous for its magnificent views of Mt. Fuji and the Fuji Five Lakes, including the popular Lake Kawaguchiko. It’s also a paradise for hiking and trekking, surrounded by nature and stunning autumn scenery.

Yamanashi is Japan’s number one producer of grapes and wine — the birthplace of Japanese winemaking! The prefecture accounts for around 30–40% of Japan’s wine production, and visitors can enjoy grape picking or buy fresh fruit and wine at much more affordable prices than in Tokyo.

Recommended Autumn Spots

As Autumn has come, here are some recommended spots around Yamanashi prefecture.

Shosenkyo Gorge
Often considered Japan’s most beautiful gorge, Shosenkyo is famous for its uniquely shaped rocks and crystal-clear waters. Located just north of Kofu City, it’s beautiful year-round, but autumn is the best time to visit for the colorful foliage. You can reach it in 30–50 minutes by bus from Kofu Station, and even take the ropeway for an incredible panoramic view.

Lake Kawaguchiko Momiji Corridor
Stroll beneath 60 towering maple trees that line the Nashigawa River near Lake Kawaguchiko. During peak season, the Momiji Festival lights up the area with food stalls, local drinks, souvenirs, and a magical autumn atmosphere.

Oishi Park (Lake Kawaguchiko)

Oishi Park is located on the northern shore of Lake Kawaguchiko and is one of the best places to see Mount Fuji reflected on the lake, surrounded by vibrant autumn colors. The Koiki Festival held here features local produce, snacks, and handicrafts — perfect for a relaxing afternoon.

Nishizawa Gorge

One of Japan’s top 100 waterfalls can be found here — the Nishizawa Waterfall, a breathtaking sight framed by fiery red and golden leaves in autumn. The hiking trail takes about 3–4 hours round trip, making it ideal for those who love nature and outdoor adventure.

Furouen Garden (Kofu City)
A smaller, local spot within Kofu City where the maple leaves turn a brilliant red. It’s perfect for a peaceful, uncrowded stroll — and since it’s close to our head office, you can easily combine your visit with a tour of our jewelry workshop.
